In
today's competitive market, there is no point in firing
off hundreds of "Dear Sir/Madam" letters
with photocopied form-CVs attached.
Save
yourself some stamps and envelopes and flush those letters
down the toilet - you will achieve exactly the same
result.
Once
again, every aspect of your application needs
to be targeted:
 |
Right
industry for your qualifications and experience
(they will also be looking for use of appropriate
terminology). |
 |
Right
company for you (indigenous VS multi-national,
relaxed VS uptight, people-focused VS
overtly profit-focused). |
 |
Most
importantly, sent to the right person (the
person who is capable of actually giving you a job).
|
A
letter that might get you noticed for a marketing job
in the IT sector is not necessarily going to get you
onto the shortlist in an FMCG company.
Just
as there is no such thing as a "one size
fits all" CV, you need to take time, care
and attention with your cover letters.
Once
again - put youself in the shoes of the person who will
be reading it and question the utility and impact of
every word that you include.
